Level

Intermediate/Advanced

Purpose
  • To illustrate the connections that exist amongst species that share the same habitat.
Materials
Procedure

Group activity/discussion

1.  Open the umbrella and turn it upside down so that it forms a large bowl shape. Put the slips of paper with the quotes on them inside.

a) Select seven students to randomly pick one quote each from the umbrella.

2. Put the slips of paper cut from the Things Found in Grizzly Country page into the now empty umbrella.

a) Have each student pick one. Continue picking until all the slips are gone. Turn the umbrella right side up.

3.  Ask the student with Quote #1 to come forward and read it aloud. Attach the quote to the umbrella with a clip. Discuss its meaning.

a) Ask students with items from the Grizzly Country list that relate to this quote to come up to the front.
b) As they attach their item to the umbrella, they will explain how it relates to the grizzly. All students with names of plants should respond.

4.  Ask the student with Quote #2 to come forward and read it aloud. Proceed as in step #3.

a) Continue until all quotes have been read and all items have been attached.
b) Using blank slips of paper, add any missing items you can think of.

5. If all these things are connected under the bear’s umbrella, what would happen if the bear disappeared?

a) Use the blank cards to write or draw suggestions on how we can help our landscapes, wild regions, parks and towns by doing more of some things and less of others.
