“When people and their activities are superimposed over bear habitat, the potential for conflict exists.” 1

As long as people and bears have occupied the same areas, there have likely been at least occasional conflicts between the two. Today, with increasing human presence in the Canadian Rockies, the potential for conflict between people and bears has become a significant conservation, management and public safety concern. Efforts to understand the causes and symptoms of conflict, and to reduce or prevent it from occurring, are therefore an important aspect of bear research.
