Under a Familiar Sky

Teacher's Guide

The landscape sketches of Peter and Catharine Whyte are first and foremost works of art, "brightly seen, vividly felt, unique contributions to the visual history of the Rockies" (Jon Whyte, Mountain Glory, 1988). They also provide a window into the shared life and vision of two artists, and invite us to explore the tradition of outdoor landscape painting, the natural splendour of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, and the rich social history of Banff and area from the 1930s to the 1960s.

This guide includes activities that will help you explore the exhibition and connect it to aspects of the social studies, geography, language learning, drama, and visual art curriculum. We hope you use it in the spirit in which it is intended: as a kick-starter for ideas, a guide to be shaped through use, and a starting point for further investigation.

As a group, these activities are designed to give students an understanding of the style and goals of outdoor landscape painting, to provide a sense of the Canadian Rockies as a place, and to sketch the character of these unique artists and their social environment. Looking, discussion, and hands-on activity are worked into all activities. Questions are frequently asked (with main concepts they are intended to raise included in italics.) The activities are presented in an order that builds a concepts and knowledge base, however teachers are encouraged to pick and choose, mix and match according to their student's needs, curriculum requirements, and time constraints.

Most importantly: Have fun with these activities and enjoy the art!
