Background
  • In addition to travelling extensively through the mountain landscape of western Canada, Byron Harmon lived, worked   and photographed extensively within the community of Banff, Alberta.  

  • He was a prominent businessman, community leader and promoter. He photographed Banff events, activities and surroundings and was enthusiastic about promoting Banff to the world.

Activity 5A - Elementary

 

i.  Using letter-size paper and small printed copies of photographs selected from         Image Set E , make a two-fold brochure that promotes Banff’s greatest features to prospective visitors in 1925.  Features may include mountain scenery, outdoor recreation and events.

 

ii. Display finished brochures

 

 

Activities 5B - Intermediate and Senior

 

i.   Discuss how organizations might have made use of Harmon’s images (eg. Banff Winter Carnival, Banff Indian Days, Chamber of Commerce, etc.).

 

ii.  Using legal-size paper, small printed copies of photographs selected from Image Set E, and textual content, make a three-fold brochure promoting Banff’s diverse qualities to prospective visitors in 1925.  (Intermediate and senior students might also wish to use Image sets D1, D2 or D3 and/or Image set H .)

 

iii. Display and discuss brochures.  How does your brochure feature these Banff aspects: scenery and environment, outdoor recreation, activities and events, commercial development, facilities and amenities?
