School Programs
We offer a variety of programs for grades 1 to 12: social studies,
language learning, and visual arts. All school programs are
developed to complement the curriculum and are delivered by Museum
Educators and Interpreters. Call 762-2291 extension 314 for bookings and

Social Studies
My Museum
Grades 4 & 5, 90 minutes
Available year round
Be a curator for a day! Explore the role of museums in a hands-on session. Conduct research in our galleries and select “artifacts” from our hands-on collection to create your own small exhibit interpreting Banff’s heritage.
Cabin Fever!
Grade 4 & 5, 120 minutes
Available May/June/September/October
Travel through time to the 1890’s and back to experience life as an early Banffite! Our travels will show us important dates and events in Banff’s history, and give us a look at a way of life, one without running water or electricity! Moving up in time, we will then visit the homes of community builders Peter and Catharine (Robb) Whyte, and Phillip and Pearl (Brewster) Moore.

This guided time travel adventure takes you off Banff's beaten path
to the actual locations where many colourful characters made their mark!
We will also cover hot topics through time: the birth of Canada's
National Parks, the Canadian Pacific Railway making its way through
Banff, Senator Forget and Architect Walter Painter's dilemma, and the
ghost town of Bankhead. Not to worry, our trivia challenge along the way
will keep you on your toes and put your wits to the test!
Journey to Everest
Grade 3 – 90 minutes
Available November 12, 2007 to March 28, 2008
Follow in the footsteps of the 1982 Canadian Everest Expedition. Travel from Kathmandu to Everest Base Camp and learn about the geography of Nepal and the way of life of its people. Discover how people adapt to their environment by comparing our Canadian communities to those of this Himalayan country. We will complete our journey by making our own prayer flag.

Language Arts
Artefacts Speak!
Grades 4 to 6, 90 minutes
Available year round
Imagine having a conversation with an artefact, what would it tell you? Would it talk about all its great journeys? Tell you about the people who owned it? Using artefacts as inspiration, students will take part in creative writing activities and create their our own stories.
Writing with History
Grades 7 to 12, 90 minutes
Available year round
Objects tell us endless stories about the people who owned them. They can also inspire us to create our own stories. Students will investigate the line between history and imagination through creative writing activities.
Science
Bears, Wolves, Cougars! Oh My!
Grade 2 – 90 minutes
Available year round
Discover the world of wild animals! What do elk eat? Where do bears sleep? What does an animal need to survive? This hands-on program includes interactive story telling, animal watching, animal sound guessing and more!
Drawing with Light!
Grade 4 - 120 minutes
Available February 4 to April 11, 2008, Tuesdays and Wednesdays only
Think fast! How many different types of light sources can you name? Learn how light travels and see how it can be captured to create an image! Investigate drawings created from light (photographs), take a look at the inside of a darkroom and create your own sunprint!

Visual Arts
- Line Them Up!
Grades K & 1 – 90 minutes

I spy lines everywhere! Draw lines of all sorts! Short ones, long ones, squiggly and wavy ones, then line them up to create texture! Finish by creating your own unique masterpiece!
Why So Blue?
Grades 1& 2 – 90 minutes
Available November 26, 2007 to January 11, 2008 and April 28 to October 3, 2008
Explore the colours of emotions! Learn about light and dark, and warm and cool colours. Check out primary colours and mix them together to see new ones appear! Complete your colour adventure by creating your own colourful work of art!
Art’s Elemental!
Grades 3 to 6 – 90 minutes
Available November 26, 2007 to January 11, 2008 and April 28 to October 3, 2008
Explore the elements of art. Experiment with line, shape, colour, value and texture. Learn about different types of art and how one can be the inspiration for another. Complete your art adventure by creating your own masterpiece!

Earth Meets Sky
Grades 3 to 6, 90 minutes
Available April 28 to September 14, 2008
What is a landscape painting? Explore landscape art and see what it would be like to spend a day in the shoes of a landscape artist! We will learn about the main parts of a landscape painting, learn new art terms, and create a collaborative landscape masterpiece! If the weather is nice, we will paint our own landscape painting out on the Museum’s grounds. Supplies provided.
Art En Plein Air
Grades 7 to 12, 90 minutes
Available April 28 to September 14, 2008
Venture into the world of the landscape artist! Take a look at landscape art from our permanent collection, and learn about “Art En Plein Air”. What is it? When did it start? Take part in interactive activities, learn about style, composition and art terms, and get inspired to create your own landscape art! Sketching by the Bow – if the weather is nice, students can then experience sketching in the great outdoors.
Composing Art
Grades 7 to 12, 90 minutes
Available year round (except January to March)
Discover what makes a great work of art. Explore the keys to drawing and painting: balance and composition, contrast, movement, patterns and repetition, proportion, and depth. Survey a variety of painting styles through works from our permanent art collection, and get inspired to create your own unique composition.

Information & Tips
- All school programs are developed to complement the curriculum and are delivered by Museum Educators and Interpreters.
- All school programs are free for local Bow Valley schools (Banff, Canmore, Exshaw and Morley). Schools outside the
Bow Valley: $75 per class (program fee includes Museum admission).
- Program booking dates are available on a first come, first served basis. Spaces are limited. We encourage you to make reservations as far in advance as possible to avoid disappointment – a minimum of two weeks in advance when possible, 3 weeks for programs in French.
- Student to adult ratio: provide 1 adult supervisor for every 6 students for grades K to 3.
- Program delivery: 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM
- Avoid “telephone tag” by emailing.

Teacher-Guided Programs
Teachers are invited to take students through the Museum on their own. Please book your visit to avoid sharing the Museum with many other classes/groups and to assure a good learning experience. Admission fee: $3.50 per student, teachers and adult supervisors are admitted free of charge.
