Collaborative Landscape Art

Can a group of people create a work of art?

During the length of the exhibit entitled The Lives and Legacy of Peter and Catharine Whyte, visitors were invited to get inspired by the landscape paintings of Peter and Catharine Whyte, and take part in an attempt to create a collaborative landscape drawing. 2156 visitors took part in the activity that ran from April 2005 to January 2006. Seven collaborative drawings were completed.

The guidelines for collaborative art making were that each person pick a square that had not been drawn in, keeping in mind that their square was part of a bigger picture and had to relate to others around it. Participants were also asked to respect the contributions of others, since this was a shared work in progress. Together, the squares were to form a completed landscape drawing. The results of this activity are posted here so that all participants can view their contribution to the greater whole.

Thank you to everyone who participated!
