The Whyte Museum Shops are proud to represent a number of local and regional artists.  From beautiful ceramic vessels and original landscape paintings to contemporary photography, the Whyte Museum Shops are your source for Alberta made art. 

All artwork should be purchased in person as our selection of works is constantly evolving.  Here is an introduction to the artists currently represented in our shops.  We invite you to visit our Museum Shops on your next visit to Banff to enjoy the works of these artists. Amos, Barbara
The paintings of Barbara Amos involve a local scene that is cut up and rearranged. The realism is a starting point that dissolves into layering, fragmenting and restructuring, creating a metaphor for the changes in our society. For the past few years her work has focused on urban and corporate themes. Her recent work has moved into the landscape and environmental issues.

Anderson, Roy
Norwegian born Roy Andersen has called Banff home for 35 years.  A ski instructor and competing Nordic athlete in his earlier years in Banff, Roy has been a professional photographer for the last 25 years. Roy’s latest work reflects his love of the land the Canadian Rockies, the prairie landscape, and America’s Southwest.

Bamiling, Ed
Ed Bamiling is the Ceramics Facilitator at the Banff Centre. His ceramic work takes inspiration from numerous natural and historical sources.

Bause, Lucie
Visual artist Lucie Bause explores the landscape and the renewing energy humanity receives from it. Her paintings are impressionistic and colourful, sharing essence of place and spirit of landscape and inspiring a connection to nature. Her work is unusual and popular, finding a place in collections around the world.

Bell, Colin
Calgary artist Colin Bell was born in Argentina, where he studied architecture. After immigrating to Canada in 1965, he was drawn to the Rocky Mountains, where he found inspiration in the beautiful scenery. His disciplines are watercolours, oils, acrylics and drawing.

Cameron, Michael
One of Alberta’s most prominent contemporary artists, Michael Cameron has taken the landscape genre beyond a representation of physical geography.  His work reveals his philosophical beliefs and the mystery of human existence in our harsh environment.

Dery, Monika
Monika’s art story began in earnest only five years ago, when she re-entered the painting scene after a 25 years hiatus while earning a living as a travel agency owner. Her art involvement, after attending two years of university classes in the early 70’s and numerous workshops, evolved into a fifteen year studio pottery business during that time. Watercolour and then batik on rice paper has become her passion and is a constantly evolving joy.

Elkins, Susan
Originally trained under the guidance of Henry Hensche at his summer school during the 1960’s and 70’s, today this Banff-based artist produces images that reflect the unique and varied lighting found in the Canadian West. Hensche was a student of Charles Hawthorne, the founder of The Cape Cod School of Art in Massachusetts. Susan Elkins’ career has included exhibitions across Canada and the United States, and her work is found in private and public collections world-wide.

Elliott, Max
Having lived in the Canadian Rockies for more than 20 years, Max has explored glaciers, watersheds and mountains on canvas and on foot.  Her work is as powerful and awe-inspiring as this landscape.

Gay-Fraret, Véronique
Local artist Véronique gay-Fraret was born in Switzerland, where she studied architecture. In 2002, she relocated to Banff with her family. Having previously spent some time in Banff National Park, Véronique fell in love with the Rockies. An avid hiker and wildlife watcher, she paints many subjects, from flowers to birds and mammals.

Habing, Conrad
Originally from central Canada, Conrad has lived in the mountains around Banff National Park in Canada’s west since 1977.Conrad’s main focus with photography is to produce a strong visual design that will engage the viewer’s eye and serves the image. He is willing to experiment with any technique or piece of equipment that will serve his vision for the final print. His work can range from traditional gelatin silver prints, to digital prints, and prints with drawn or painted elements.

Hardie-Wigram, Catherine
Catherine has been a resident of Banff for over 30 years. She started painting full-time in 1997, taking lessons from a local professional artist.  During the summer months, Catherine spends her time hiking in the mountains and taking photographs of both the scenery and the flora, which together with field sketches, are used in her paintings.

Hare, Jannis Allan
Banff artist Jannis Allan Hare began painting at an early age, starting with watercolors and a sketchbook. Preferring to portray the strength and atmosphere of the mountains with acrylic and oils, and choosing to paint wildflowers with watercolors, Jannis hopes to encourage the appreciation of the mountain landscape and bring attention to the importance of their preservation.

Hjorleifson, Tom
Tom resides in Canmore, Alberta and has always been fascinated by wildlife and Canada’s wilderness.  Tom’s original hand painted, fired clay sculpture is found in collections around the world.

Huras, Lynne
Visual artist Lynne Huras spends much time on the trails (summer and winter) sketching, photographing or simply sitting quiet.  She then takes her experiences home and translates them into acrylic on canvas.  Her hope is to convey her sense of awe and love for nature, as well as a sense of peace.

Janes, Priscilla
After graduating from the University of Colorado with a B.A. in fine arts, Priscilla began producing one-of-a-kind clay pieces using both electric and sawdust kilns.  The natural world is her continuous source of inspiration.

Jobidon, Steve
Québec-born photographer Steve Jobidon spends the spring months working as a guide in Churchill, Manitoba, where polar bear tours are a major attraction. In observing these magnificent animals in their natural habitat, Steve finds inspiration for his creative work. His photographs reveal a sweet and playful side not usually associated with these great creatures.

Kidner, Sarah
As a member of the Canmore Artist’s and Artisans’ Guild, Sarah surrounds herself with colour and vibrancy.  Her paintings reflect the influences of her artistic mentors Canadians, Tom Thomson and “The Group of Seven”.

Kirby, Michael
Michael Kirby is a retired engineer who spent most of his career working in Calgary, Alberta. Michael and his wife recently moved to Gibson's, BC, on the Sunshine Coast where he continues his passion for turning wood.

Michael's wood work is first designed and assembled from pieces of Bloodwood, Purple Heart, Walnut, Lacewood and other exotic woods. He then painstakingly turns the bowls and vases on a lathe to perfection. The work is finished with Tung Oil or other Scandinavian oils. All the pieces are functional but should be washed by hand with mild soap and rubbed with oil on occasion to maintain moisture in the wood.

Kroeger, Ernie
Prominent photographer Ernie Kroeger has been featured in solo exhibitions throughout Canada. Also an educator, he has shared his love of photography with aspiring photographers, teaching at many facilities, including the Banff Center of the Arts in Banff, AB, and the University College of the Caribou in Kamloops, BC.  Ernie’s black and white photography is rich in symbolism and reflects a profound interest in exploring the little details in life.

Lamartine, Richard
Popular Canmore artist Richard Lamartine has set aside his paintbrush for his new passion: mask-making.  Richard’s masks are delightful creations of animals found in our mountain environment: bears, cougars and wolves to name a few.  Utilizing the Japanese raku style, Richard’s masks are unique, as no two pieces turn out exactly the same.

Lemire, Pierre
Pierre’s interest in photography began in his teenage years, in the province of Québec. Combining his work as a mountain guide with his love of black and white photography, Pierre’s fascination for the mountains is reflected in his photography.

Logan, Keith
Keith is famous for his wonderfully vivid images of Alberta’s birds and landscape. His photographs have appeared in magazines such as National Geographic, Nature Canada and Birder’s World.  An exhibit of his works is currently on display at the Smithsonian Institute.  To view his work please visit www.keithlogan.org

A Banffite for over 17 years, visual artist Jean Macintosh chooses to paint with watercolours.  Striving to capture the beauty of nature, whether it be a mountain landscape, floral or a snow-laden tree, Jean has found watercolour to be not only a gratifying creative process, but also a meditative journey.

Always interested in art and all forms of creativity, visual artist Zelda Nelson paints en plein-air, working with oils.  Painting with passion and spontaneity, Zelda’s goal is to project feeling through her art, whether it be with oils, watercolours or acrylics.

Respect for wildlife and wild creativity remain at the forefront for Erica.  She currently enjoys “en plein aire” painting trips to the mountains and is continually striving for excellence, growth and authenticity in her artwork.

Osadetz, Sarah Jane
Born from a family of artists, Sarah Jane Osadetz has been exposed to various aspects of arts and culture throughout her life.  Continuing the legacy, Sarah Jane creates jewellery, mostly influenced by natural and cultural symbols.

In the tradition of black and white photography, Craig Richards has been traversing the Canadian Rockies with his large format camera for twenty two years capturing the elusive light that plays upon these monumental forms.

Richter, Karin
Since moving to Canada from her native Germany, Karin Richter has enthusiastically taught many aspiring artists over the years, from local workshops and classes, to across Canada and even overseas. Calling Calgary home, Karin finds inspiration from her proximity to nature, where the enormous Canadian landscape has been a constant source of inspiration in her artistic endeavours.

Saltiel-Marshall, Alice
For over three decades Saltiel has been capturing the essence of the west in oils, watercolours and pencil drawings. Living in Canmore, Alberta promotes an intimacy with the mountain landscape, its wildlife and flora. Thriving on variety, Saltiel enjoys interpreting a wide range of subjects. Her art has earned her awards, prestigious commissions and memeberships to the Federation of Canadian Artists in 1990 and Life Membership in the Canmore Artists’ and Artisans’ Guild in 1998 (a member since 1981). Saltiel is represented in public, corporate and private collections worldwide.

Bern Smith was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where he attended the Winnipeg School of Fine Art and St. Paul’s College. He worked in freelancing and then made the transition to fine art. In 1987 Smith moved to Banff, Alberta and he uses watercolours to capture the beauty of the Rocky Mountains. Smith has become an important part of the artistic community in Alberta. His work has been acquisitioned by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and selected and presented to international sponsors in the Banff Television Festival.

Banff artist Trisha Todoruk’s love affair with the arts started at an early age in Winnipeg.  Always been drawn to the world of art, Trisha moved to the Rocky Mountains, where she studied various art disciplines.  Now a hand building and pottery class instructor, Trisha shares her love of the arts with young and old alike.

Wasiuta, Vivian
Vivian is an artist in residence at the Banff Centre for the Arts.  She is inspired by the natural and physical environment of the Rocky Mountains and her works are intended for everyday use but have sculptural functions as well.

Westlake, Joanne
The majority of Joanne Westlake’s textiles designs lean heavily toward abstracted and repeated patterns.  Incorporating symbols that have been passed down through the ages, such as triangles with materials, paints and patterns, Joanne’s favourite subject materials are ancient runes, symbols and creation myths.

Woolley Monod, Beth
Beth Woolley Monod, love of her mountain surroundings is highly evident in her art. Using both hot and cold techniques, Beth works in a wide variety of mediums but is primarily interested in silver, gold and glass.
