Measure and report on the condition of key glaciers

There is as much water in Canada's glaciers as there is in our rivers and lakes. The Canadian government has a team of five scientists and three chemists / technical staff who monitor changes in the frozen half of Canada's water resources. This group has continuously monitored key glaciers in western Canada since the mid-1960s.

The amount of water stored in glaciers is always changing. If we want to be better able to predict, and avoid future water supply problems, we need to know more about the past and present state of glaciers. Glacier monitoring also helps us to learn how human actions are changing the frozen part of the planet. Canada's Glaciology Program supplies data to various international organizations including the Global Climate Observing System of the World Meteorological Organization and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
