Featured Shop Artist: Kari Woo

In this new series we will be featuring artists that are currently in our Museum Shop. Janet Boger, Manager of the Museum Shop and Visitor Services aims to feature local artisan products from both the province of Alberta and greater Canada. Our first feature is local artist, Kari Woo.

Kari Woo – Canmore, Alberta

Kari discovered the art of jewellery making in 1993 while recovering from a serious snowboarding accident. She immediately fell in love with the art and graduated with honours from the Alberta College of Art & Design (ACAD), with a specialization in jewellery and metals in 2003. As the former owner of Calgary shop and gallery INFLUX, Kari is well versed in the art of collection curation. Kari resides with her young family in Canmore and works out of her home-based studio.

We are pleased to feature Kari’s unique line of silver jewellery in our Museum Shop this season.

“My aim is to create substance and meaning through design. Patrons know my work through several distinct collections of sterling silver jewellery, which offer the wearer versatility, comfort and simplicity. I use solid sterling silver and gold sourced from Canadian refiners to ensure quality. When possible, I use ethically sourced and/or re-purposed old gold and family gemstones. I am an advocate of the handmade economy. I believe that art can change the world and that creativity is transformational. My work intersects the urban and natural worlds, from which I find ideas and inspiration. Random patterns in nature meet high fashion. Natural architecture meets modern sculpture. Rigid lines yield to organic forms. The notion of less is more and that there is perfection in imperfection are the two key driving forces behind my aesthetic choices. Minimalist sculpture and architecture from the mid-20th century are amongst my most favorite design influences.”
