The Whyte Outside: Explore our Community and our Collection in the Great Outdoors

Our museum houses remarkable treasures indoors. But did you know that we are also very proud of all our offerings outside our walls? There’s a lot to explore outside the Whyte Museum.

Safe and scenic, join us this summer outside. We’ve taken our archives and collection in to the great outdoors this summer with outstanding opportunities to discover and connect here in Banff.

Here’s a list of all we have going on:

1. The Whyte Museum Walks App: Explore the stories, discover the secrets, and meet the characters that made Banff. This simple self-guided walking tour app currently has one unique tour from the Whyte Museum’s collection. Stay tuned for more tours coming in the future. Now available in the Apple App Store and on Google Play.

2. Our backyard: Here on the banks of the mighty Bow River, we’re fortunate to be surrounded by lovely grounds and gardens. There are some interesting things to explore in our own backyard. For example, the Whyte has re-installed a mural of Sitting Wind and the Cultural Trade Route is up again in near the Bow River. This mural celebrates Indigenous culture and relationships in the Bow Valley and Banff.

3. Picnic benches for Indigenous People to paint: Banff Lake Louise Tourism has generously donated five picnic benches for our grounds. We have invited Indigenous artists to paint these benches. Continue to look for them on our grounds – coming soon!

4. Art and Geology Walking Tour: Join art curator, Lisa Christensen and geologist, Dave Christensen in a guided walk that explores the places depicted in some of Canada’s finest art and discover the landscapes that inspired them. Expect lively discussions spanning the history of time up to today. Register here.

5. Indigenous Tea and Walks: Join Stoney Nakoda Elder Philomene Stevens and Knowledge Keeper Tracey Stevens for a 30-minute talk along the Bow River and some stories on The Whyte Museum grounds. Traditional tea will also be served. There’s will also be a 90-minute walk that explores plants and animals at a separate date and time. Cost is $65 per person. Registration coming soon.

Keep an eye on our social channels for more information on exciting events and more opportunities to learn, discover and explore the Canadian Rockies with us in, out and around The Whyte Museum.
